Houghton’s Pond Bathhouse Honored with Award for Design Excellence
Milton, MA - - May 5, 2016 –Houghton’s Pond Bathhouse located in the Blue Hills Reservation in Milton, Massachusetts, was honored today with a Merit Award for Design by the Boston Society of Landscape Architects. Boston Building & Bridge served as the general contractor for the project to remove the existing 1968 bathhouse and build the new 4,500 square foot facility. Working in collaboration with Michael Wasser Associates and HKT Architects, Boston Building & Bridge built a new bathhouse with outdoor terraces to transition from the bathhouse down to the beach, along with the construction of a new universally accessible nature boardwalk along Marigold Marsh. The goal of this project for the Massachusetts Department of Conservation and Recreation was not only to replace aging infrastructure but also to attract more visitors and extend the use of the facility.
Environmental protection was an imperative for the project. The size of the new bathhouse is approximately 30% less than the previous building resulting in a net decrease in the amount of impermeable surface. In addition, 11-foot high concrete walls were eliminated. The project includes measures to mitigate run off with the use of permeable paving around the bathhouse and to control erosion through the use of natural landscaping and storm water management. Boston Building & Bridge employed best-in-class building strategies and practices to deliver this sustainable project for recreational facility construction.
According to Barbara Farina, Architecture Project Manager for the Massachusetts Department of Conservation and Recreation, “This recognition is the result of great teamwork and perseverance. The public really loves the building and it is often referenced when we discuss bathhouses in other parks.” About Boston Building & Bridge Corp.
