Architect: designLAB architects
Owner: City of Boston
Scope of Work
Boston Building & Bridge Corp. was the general contractor for the renovation of the Curley Community Center. Located on L-Street in South Boston. This 1930’s bathhouse, turned community center, is undergoing a major renovation. The Curley Community Center once provided hot showers and recreational facilities to the city's working people during the most difficult years of the Depression. The bathhouse remained a popular gathering spot during the years when Boston Harbor was considered safe for swimming and before air-conditioning helped people cope with the summer heat.
The renovations included a total reconfiguration of the 56,000 sf interior, including a complete replacement of building systems and the addition of a new fire suppression system. The three main entrances on the street side as well as the exits out to the beach have beem upgraded to allow for full accessibility into and out of the building. New entry plazas will allow for seating and socializing at each of the entries, elevating the importance of this iconic building. The historic structure itself will receive partial renovations, including all new glazing, selective enlargements to current window openings, and waterproofing/structural improvements that enable the building to be more resilient to sea level rise. Additionally, the landscapes will include modest amenities and the lawns will be transformed into meadow-rich bioswales that will absorb water during storm surges.
