Engine No. 42 Celebration of Groundbreaking for First New Firehouse In 30 Years

Boston, MA - September 19, 2019 - Mayor Walsh, Boston Fire Commissioner Joseph Finn, Architect Dore & Whittier, Contractor Boston Building & Bridge Corp., and members of the community witnessed the groundbreaking of the first new firehouse built in Boston in over 30 years.

Engine 42, Rescue 2, District 9 Firehouse was first opened in 1952 and the $23.5 million investment in a new facility is innovative and groundbreaking in itself. Through its innovative design the new firehouse will support the health, wellness, and safety of the firefighters that put their lives at risk to protect their community. The new technology minimizes particulate contaminants from traveling to the living quarters of the building. This breaking down of the building into three zones will help to keep carcinogens from circulating throughout while new personal and gear cleaning facilities help to protect as well. All improvements will reduce the risk of cancer for the firefighters.

This is part of Mayor Walsh’s commitment to the health and safety of the firefighters of Boston and to provide them with the necessary tools they need to respond when called upon. This is part of a greater initiative across the City of Boston’s firehouses to include new equipment, trucks, industrial level cleaning, and the replacement of several other firehouses.
